AnythingMD Now Works Inside Your AI Agent: Convert Documents to Markdown over MCP
AnythingMD is now a remote MCP server. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Kilo and any MCP client can turn local PDFs, Word files, slides and scans into clean Markdown in one call, with the same credits as the web app.
Your AI agent reads Markdown well. It reads PDFs, scanned documents and slide decks badly. Starting today, AnythingMD is available as a remote MCP server at https://mcp.anythingmd.com/mcp, so an agent can turn those files into clean Markdown without you leaving the conversation.
In short
- Local files convert in one call, uploaded through a signed link, never pasted into the chat
- Public links work too
- Long documents come back page by page, so they don't flood the agent's context
- Same credits as the web app, and new accounts get 20 pages free
What it does
Local files, one call. The agent asks AnythingMD for a signed upload link, uploads the file, and starts the conversion. The file bytes never pass through the chat, which keeps them out of the model's context and avoids the corrupted base64 that agents produce when they try to inline a file.
Public links too. Give the agent a link to a PDF or Office file and it converts that directly.
Results in the same call. The server waits up to about 50 seconds and returns the Markdown when the job finishes, so most documents need only one tool call. A long document returns a job ID instead, and the agent picks the result up when it is ready.
Long documents, page by page. Large results arrive in pages of about 20,000 tokens with a cursor for the next one. The agent reads what it needs instead of pulling a 150,000-token document into its context.
Failures cost nothing. If a file can't be downloaded or converted, the agent gets a clear error that says what to do next, and you are not charged.
Here is what the agent receives for a three-page PDF (Markdown trimmed):

Connect in a minute
- Create an API key in Settings → API keys and set it as the
ANYTHINGMD_API_KEYenvironment variable. - Add the server. For Claude Code:
claude mcp add -s user --transport http anythingmd https://mcp.anythingmd.com/mcp --header 'Authorization: Bearer ${ANYTHINGMD_API_KEY}'
For Codex, Cursor (one-click install), VS Code, Windsurf, Kilo and other clients, Settings → API keys has a ready-to-copy configuration for each, and the MCP setup guide covers every step. The server is also listed in the official MCP Registry as com.anythingmd/convert.
Then ask your agent something like "Convert ~/Downloads/report.pdf to Markdown and summarize the risks section."
Pricing and limits
- Per converted page: 15 credits, including OCR for scanned PDFs and images. Credits come from prepaid packs. There is no subscription, and purchased credits don't expire. See pricing.
